During the summer of 1921 Giacomo Puccini is at his home at the lake, working on his newest opera, Turandot. Just as he finds the solution to a nagging problem, his friend and publisher Carlo Clausetti arrives to talk about the progress of the work. He is followed by Marco and Setta, two friends of Giacomo's and another couple, Rudi and Lucia. After introductions are made Giacomo asks his guests to sing for him. It doesn't take much persuading to sing their favorites from the maestro's operas as Carlo accompanies them at the piano. When Carlo asks if one of the singers might try the new aria from Turandot, Giacomo refuses, saying the piece is too new, and they go to supper with tension in the air. Later, when they are alone for a moment, Carlo persuades Rudi to try this new piece, "Nessun dorma", Giacomo hears and is enraged. Only the clever intervention of Marco with the famous "Coat Aria", from La Bohème and Lucia's pleading with "O mio babbino caro", finally calms the maestro. But the strain of the situation is too much for Lucia, who has been hiding her ill health, and she takes a sudden turn for the worse. In true Puccini fashion we see Lucia slipping quickly away. She is delirious and becomes Mimi from La Bohème, the others take on identities from the opera, and the final scene is recreated as Mimi falls into her last sleep and the curtain rings down on Puccini's great finale.
